Your Google Maps listing, set up or fixed line by line

When someone searches "plumber near me", Google shows a map with three businesses. Your Google Maps listing decides if you can be one of them. We set it up or fix it, line by line.

What we do

What we do with your listing

  1. The main category first. It tells Google what kind of business you are. Google asks you to use as few categories as you need, and the most specific ones that fit.

  2. A service area where you really work. Google allows about 2 hours of driving time and up to 20 areas. A bigger area does not move you closer to the person searching.

  3. The same name, address, phone and hours everywhere. On Google, Apple Maps and Bing, and on your website. When they disagree, Google cannot be sure they are the same business.

  4. Anything that could get the listing suspended. Extra words in the business name, or a mailbox used as the address. Google can suspend a listing for either.

  5. Google's steps to confirm your listing. Only you can finish them. We guide you.

  6. Calls from the listing counted. Calls and forms from your listing are counted, and marked as coming from the listing where we can tell.

It is in every plan, and the listing stays in your name.

Why it matters for calls

Your Google Maps listing is the box with your name, hours, photos and reviews. Google calls it a Google Business Profile. Google says it picks who shows up by how well you match the search, how close you are, and how well known you are.

Google ranks the map on three things: how well your listing matches the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how well known you are. The listing is where the first one is decided.

The listing's own Performance screen shows the calls, website clicks and direction requests it brings. "Calls" there counts taps on the call button, not answered calls.

What Google decides, not us

Google reviews every change to a listing itself, and it gives no set time.

No one can promise a ranking. What no one can promise

Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Distance from the person searching is one of the three things Google ranks the map on, next to how well your listing matches the search and how well known you are. A listing can be right in every line and still not show up in a town an hour away.

Our part: make sure your listing tells Google exactly what you do and where, so it can match the searches you want.

Google decides these, not us

  • A place in the top three on the map
  • Showing up on the map in towns far from your business
  • Getting a suspended listing back
  • A date for Google to approve an edit

Questions

Questions about Google Maps listings

Is Google My Business the same as Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile. It is the same listing: the one that shows your business on the Google map and in Google Maps.

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence: how well your listing matches the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how well known your business is. Often the listing is filed under the wrong main category, or the website has no page for the job and the town.

Can I show up on the map in towns far from my shop?

Usually not, and nobody can promise it. Distance from the person searching is one of the three things Google ranks the map on, and no setting changes it. A service area can cover about 2 hours of driving and up to 20 areas, but it does not move you closer to the person searching. For towns farther away, a page for each service in that town and ads are the honest ways in.

Should I add my town or my service to my business name?

No. Google does not allow extra words in the business name, and it can suspend a listing for it. The name on your listing should be your real business name, the same as on your website.

Do you need the password to my Google account?

No. The Free Scan needs no logins or passwords. If you work with us, you add us as a helper on your listing, so we can do the work. The listing stays in your name.
